![]() In evening, I wrote to Mom & Dad and Carol. After noon chow we ran relays until 3 and had the rest of the afternoon off. 1 - An easy day – After morning chow we ran the obstacle course then marched around the camp for an hour and a half until the barracks were inspected. The chow today was lousy! Played poker at night and lost an even dollar. ![]() Later had entertainment in the game room and still later read several Dorothy Parker stories from After Such Pleasures which were very good. Had all afternoon off during which time the entire company went to the Canteen for a celebration. Worked crossword puzzles, wrote in my diary, read Benjamin Blake, and wrote to Virginia Schlitz. So doing missed our graduation exercises, but my hat wasn’t dry anyway. Lay in bed about 15 minutes longer because I was awfully tired. ![]() I don’t get much time to read with all the other things I have to do.Īugust 31- Got up at 5. I thinks this was the most miserable day I have ever spent! I have read Frenchman’s Creek in the last week and now I have started Benjamin Blake. We mopped, waxed, and polished the floors from 11:50 P.M. we got up, dressed, and went to clean the drill hall. I was thoroughly exhausted after this field day but I then learned that I was to go on a working detail at the drill hall. We had our shots in the morning and then cleaned the barracks all afternoon. The day in boot camp that will always be vivid in my memory is the day of our first inoculations. In the last 7 weeks we have done strenuous drilling, exercising, and have cleaned the barracks innumerable times. These made my arm very sore and made some in our company very sick. The following Friday we got our first inoculations. July 14 - We were marched over to our permanent boot barracks at Camp Decatur.
